Remember when you played with plastic boats on the beach and dreamed of sailing away over the horizon? Sail Martha’s Vineyard was founded in 1992 to help youth realize those dreams. Each year we teach around 400 kids how to pilot their own boats around Lagoon Pond. Island children get that summer fun and learning for free, thanks to financial contributions from many dedicated supporters like you.
For some youth, the boating bug leads to a maritime career. In Sail MV’s Maritime Studies program at MVRHS students learn about wind and weather, sailmaking, boat building and repair, navigation, and seamanship. That can lead to job opportunities with local businesses like MV Shipyard, Gannon & Benjamin, Vineyard Wind, and the Steamship Authority.
Others join the MVRHS sailing team which has grown into a New England power on the water.
Suffering from cabin fever during a long winter? Escape with one of Sail MV’s Winter Lectures. For adults, the Sail MV Rowing Club provides year-round rowing opportunities for older youth and adults in traditional Cornish rowing gigs. You can find them out on Vineyard Haven Harbor on a cold February morning, as well as on balmy summer evenings. Sail MV continues to support Menemsha Pond Racing with boats and staff, continuing a tradition providing sailing opportunities to all islanders. The Vineyard Cup Regatta is a minimal waste event.
We have a small, dedicated staff that works year-round behind the scenes teaching courses, raising funds, maintaining boats, and planning. In the summer we hire an additional 10-15 staff to work with hundreds of island and visiting youth.
We provide over $160,000 worth of scholarships every year so that Island kids can access our program for free. We couldn’t do it without you!
