SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1 RULES
The Holmes Hole H12.5 Summer racing series will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2020-2024.
Individuals’ results will only be recorded if the race committee has a competitor’s full name before the start of the first race of a day. It is the responsibility of each sailor to make sure the committee is provided with the necessary information. Failure to provide this information will result in a DNC result being recorded.
Anyone to be found using inappropriate language when communicating with the race committee will be in breach of rule 69 of the sailing rules and will be disqualified from the remainder of the seasons racing.
2 ENTRIES
Entry is open to all Herreshoff 12.5’s.
3 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the Sail Martha’s Vineyard website www.sailmv.org
4 SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
There will be no signals made ashore. Postponement or cancellation information will be available at 1200 hrs on each race day on the Holmes Hole H12.5 page on the Sail MV website.
5 SCHEDULE OF RACES
The first gun for the first class will be at 1400 hrs. each Saturday with the first day of racing on first Saturday 29th June, and the last day of racing on Saturday August 31st
6 RACING AREA
The racing area will be in the waters of Holmes hole.
7 COURSES and MARKS
The race course will be around either coast guard marks or marks designated by the race committee. Racing will always finish at the windward mark unless stated by the race committee. All course marks are to be pasts to port. The number of legs will be shown by the flying other the relevant number flag, flowed under the orange line flag onboard the committee boat.
8 STARTING AND FINISHING LINES; STARTING SYSTEM
The starting and finishing lines will be between an orange flag on the Committee Boat at the starboard end of the line and either an orange buoy or one of the marks of the course at the port end. If multiple starts are being run then the Go of the first fleet will be the 5 minutes for the second. All boats are to sail by the stern of the Committee Boat on starboard tack and check-in prior to their warning signal. The starting sequence shall be:

2 Minutes Before Start 2 Long
1 and ½ Minutes Before Start 1 Long/3 Short
1 Minute Before Start 1 Long
30 Seconds Before Start 3 Short

10 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
5 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
4 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
3 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
2 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
1 Second Before Start 1 Short
Start 1 Long
Flags: We will be using the 5-4-1-start system.
5: Class flag flown
4: P flag Flown (1st absentee used if racing course P)
1: P flag lowered (1st absentee used if racing course P)
Go: Class Flag lowered
OCS: X flag flown until all OCS craft re-crossed the line.
There may be an inflated orange buoy tethered approximately six feet astern of the Race Committee Boat. This buoy and its painter shall be considered extensions of the Race Committee Boat.
9 TIME LIMIT
The time limit for each race will be one hour for the first boat to finish. Boats finishing more than twenty minutes after the first boat that sails the course finishes will be scored DNF. This changes Rule 35.
10 PROTESTS
A boat intending to protest another boat will be required to follow the conditions set forth in Rule 61 except that no red flag will be required for the Sunfish Class. Sail MV’s will collect the protest from the boats involved, including witness statements. The final decision will be made by a jury of HH h12.5 sailors.
11 SCORING
All H-12’s will be scored boat for boat. Both days of the Vineyard Cup weekend will count for the July Series scores.
12 SAFETY
All competitors shall wear a personal flotation device (“PFD”).
