SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
1 RULES
The Menemsha Pond Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2020-2024.
Amendment 8/14/2022
Individuals’ results will only be recorded if the race committee has a competitor’s full name before the start of the first race of a day. It is the responsibility of each sailor to make sure the committee is provided with the necessary information. Failure to provide this information will result in a DNC result being recorded.
Amendment 8/10/2020
Anyone to be found using inappropriate language when communicating with the race committee will be in breach of rule 69 of the sailing rules and will be disqualified from the days racing.
2 ENTRIES
Entry is open to all sailing vessels less than 22 feet. A boat may enter by hailing the Race Committee boat and giving them their name, contact information and boat’s name. Menemsha Pond Races will contact the skipper about completing his/her entry and paying the appropriate entry fee.
3 NOTICES TO COMPETITORS
Notices to competitors will be posted on the Sail Martha’s Vineyard website www.sailmv.org
4 SIGNALS MADE ASHORE
There will be no signals made ashore. Postponement or cancellation information will be available at 1200 hrs on each race day (if applicable) by calling Bob Ranalli at 508.645.3312. If possible, the Acting Fleet Captain or his designee will send out an e-mail notifying the Fleet of a postponement or cancellation.
5 SCHEDULE OF RACES
The first gun for the first class will be at 1400 hrs. each Wednesday and Saturday with the first day of racing on July 1st, and the last day of racing on August 31st. The Marjorie Dangerfield will be held on Wednesday, August 31st.
6 CLASSES
The Race Committee reserves the right to create a separate Class if there are six or more boats of the same design. The sequence of starts will be at the discretion of the Race Committee. The Race Committee will attempt to run two races on each race day for each Class.
7 RACING AREA
The racing area will be in Menemsha Pond and Quitsa Pond (only for the second race of the Marjorie Dangerfield).
8 COURSES and MARKS
The race courses are now designated as shown below. All racers are advised to make a copy of the list. For the first few races, copies will be provided to competitors. The courses show the sequence to be followed and the direction in which each mark is to be rounded. To increase the number of courses we can provide, a separate flagged mark may be used to create a start line, turning mark, or a finish. The course letter will be shown on the whiteboard as well as the appropriate signal flat being flown under the MPR flag on the committee boat. We will continue to use the Styrofoam marks and will retain the original number designation.
9 STARTING AND FINISHING LINES; STARTING SYSTEM
The starting and finishing lines will be between an orange flag on the Committee Boat at the starboard end of the line and either an orange buoy or one of the marks of the course at the port end. If multiple starts are being run then the Go of the first fleet will be the 5 minutes for the second. All boats are to sail by the stern of the Committee Boat on starboard tack and check-in prior to their warning signal. The starting sequence shall be:
5 Minutes Before Start 5 Long
4 Minutes Before Start 4 Long
3 Minutes Before Start 3 Long
2 Minutes Before Start 2 Long
1 and ½ Minutes Before Start 1 Long/3 Short
1 Minute Before Start 1 Long
30 Seconds Before Start 3 Short
20 Seconds Before Start 2 Short
10 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
5 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
4 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
3 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
2 Seconds Before Start 1 Short
1 Second Before Start 1 Short
Start 1 Long
Flags: We will be using the 5-4-1-start system.
5: Class flag flown
4: P flag Flown (1st absentee used if racing course P)
1: P flag lowered (1st absentee used if racing course P)
Go: Class Flag lowered
OCS: X flag flown until all OCS craft re-crossed the line.
There may be an inflated orange buoy tethered approximately six feet astern of the Race Committee Boat. This buoy and its painter shall be considered extensions of the Race Committee Boat.
10 TIME LIMIT
The time limit for each race will be one hour for the first boat to finish. Boats finishing more than twenty minutes after the first boat that sails the course finishes will be scored DNF. This changes Rule 35.
11 PROTESTS
A boat intending to protest another boat will be required to follow the conditions set forth in Rule 61 except that no red flag will be required for the Sunfish Class. Sail MV’s will collect the protest from the boats involved, including witness statements. The final decision will be made by a jury of MPR sailors.
12 SCORING
All boats with a published Menemsha Pond Races rating will be scored under that system. H-12’s and any other Class with six or more boats racing (which will constitute a separate Class and warrant a separate starting line) will be scored boat for boat. Both days of the Vineyard Cup weekend will count for the July Series scores.
13 SAFETY
All competitors shall wear a personal flotation device (“PFD”).
